Orlando International Airport Guide

Car Hire

Famous for its setting close to Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Studios Orlando Resort, Wet ‘n Wild Water Park and SeaWorld Orlando, Orlando’s international airport is one of the busiest year-round in the whole of the USA. Located just six miles from the city’s central business district, it has a wide choice of onward transport systems including Disney’s Magical Express shuttle service, an on-complex metro station with trains to downtown Orlando and other districts, taxis, limos and local buses. For visitors planning to explore the beaches and other Florida highlights, car hire in Orlando International Airport is a popular option.

Who to Book With
The rental car market here is one of the largest in the world, with 10 major international car hire companies located on the ground floors of terminals A and B in the Arrivals halls. During the US school holiday seasons, car hire is the most popular means of travel, with booking well in advance necessary to ensure the car of your choice.

Need to Know Essentials
The following documents must be shown at the vehicle collection point:

- Your UK, EU or other home country valid driver’s licence
- The credit card used for the reservation
- Your passport, for confirmation of your ID
- Your confirmation of booking

For more info read our FAQ's.

America drives on the right, but British drivers will find the transition easy thanks to the good roads. Speed limits are similar to those in the UK, with a 70mph limit on highways and rural interstates, 30mph in urban areas (20mph in school zones) and 55 mph on all other roads. Hire cars in the US almost always have automatic transmission. At holiday times, traffic in Orlando and on the approach roads to the resorts is heavy and parking can be tricky. Seatbelts must be worn by all occupants, drink-driving is treated severely and it’s illegal to carry an open alcohol container in your car. Petrol stations are everywhere, with self-serve fuel cheaper than serviced fuel, and card payments are accepted.

See our guide to the US for more information on driving here.

Arriving passengers have a good choice of ground transport options, whether public or private. Holidaymakers booked into Disney World hotels will be met by a courtesy coach, and the airport’s efficient Greyhound bus service gets travellers to the central districts for around £1.50, although journey times can be compromised by heavy traffic.

There is no rail link between Orlando International Airport and the city, but the city itself offers an Amtrak station which receives services from Miami and New York, among other destinations.

Taxi stands are found on sides A and B sides of the primary terminal, on transportation Level 1 at parking spaces A22-A25, A5-A8, B30-B34 and B-5-B8, along Commercial Lane. A good number of metered taxi companies work at the airport, all of which can be booked in advance by phone. An even larger selection of limo hire companies is available.

Taxi prices:
Orlando International Airport to Orlando city centre is about £30
Orlando International Airport to Walt Disney World is about £50
Orlando International Airport to Lake Buena Vista is about £40
Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral is about £90

The city’s Lynx bus service offers route 11 to the city centre every 30 minutes between 05:56 and 23:57 from a pick-up point on the north side of landside A Terminal’s ground floor. The journey takes around 40 minutes. Lynx also offers a 1 hour, 15 minute route via service number 111 to Walt Disney World between 06:00 and 21:30 on holidays and Sundays, with both trips costing about £1.50. ATC Buses runs a shuttle service from the airport to various Orlando-Sandford hotels and the cruise piers at Port Canaveral, again with journey times dependent on traffic conditions. Many hotels as well as Walt Disney World provide free shuttles.

The airport’s large single terminal is divided into A and B sections, with four main airside concourses. Two separate security checkpoints lead to A’s West Hall airside 1 and 3 areas and B’s 2 and 4 East Atrium airside areas. The complex handles a massive 35 million passengers a year, with domestic flights arriving from all over the USA and international routes arriving from selected European and other world cities, including London, Glasgow, Dublin, Frankfurt, Montreal and Toronto.

Four on-complex car parks cater for everything from short- to long-term parking needs in locations ranging from a parking garage adjacent to the terminal to a parking lot 10 minutes’ shuttle ride away. Charges are reasonable, ranging from £8 to £14 per day for the closest bays, while valet parking costs just £20.

Free Wi-Fi access is found in all terminal areas.

What most people want to know

The following questions and answers are a selection of the most popular questions. If you do not find the answer to your question, have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.

Is Carrentals.co.uk the cheapest?

Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

Are there any additional costs?

In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance).

What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental?

In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car.

What is a worry-free label?

This label indicates that a rental car satisfies the following requirements: Unlimited kilometers, no excess liability (and no excess cover available), sustainable energy policy, and that the car rental company has a good reputation. Availability of cars satisfying these four requirements will speed up the selection of a suitable vehicle for you.

How can I change or cancel my reservation?

You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less).

When will I get a confirmation of my booking?

Most reservations will receive confirmation within minutes after payment takes place. We recommend contacting our Booking Department for last minute reservations (pick-up within 48 hours).
